Voices to the family audiobook

“You always have to listen to your heart for what you do and what you don't do. In case of doubt: Just make it easy, dear Jakob!” “I assumed that just everyone lives to the end. I just thought that the Old … that's such a generational thing … that's the only reason to die. Old …’

“People with palliative diagnosis find it comforting to remain companions through audio recording. They are then part of the children's lives without being physically there. Thanks to this hearing gift, they are even a strengthening that the child may use again and again in the future. The family audiobook enables a lasting and healthy connection between the child and the deceased parent.

“We are so grateful for this treasure that allows us to experience our beloved wife and mother with her voice over and over again. Especially Sandra's address to our daughter. It's nice not only to grieve, but also to smile together about the different stages of life and many formulations so typical of Sandra.

My beloved child. I don't know when you'll listen to this audiobook, but I'd like you to listen to it with Dad. There are many funny stories. And there are the chapters with Karl, the Cancer. And they may not be so funny. And more than that, I'd like you to listen to them together, in moments when you can stand it. And that you then also continue to listen, and hear, from me, that everything does not have to be so gloomy.

I was very excited and surprised after deciding to tackle this audiobook project, what will happen at all, what will come out of it, what kind of product will be created. And I am now very happy and grateful that I had the courage to tackle this project, that I had the strength to survive these three intensive working days well and hope for all who will hear it that it is a great treasure that tells of my life, but also a bit of the time in which I lived. And at this point I would also like to thank you three for the wonderful time we have already spent together.

As you can imagine, the question is what I want to leave for my son. How much can he remember his dad at a very young age? What opportunities are there for me to stay alive for him? Then I learned about the Familienhörbuch gGmbH and was immediately inspired by the idea of recording my own story as an audiobook with my own voice for my son.

Even before I got into this situation myself, I saw a reportage about the project and was very moved by the idea of enabling terminally ill parents to prepare their life story in a professional audiobook. On the one hand to cope with one's own terrible diagnosis, but especially as a reminder for the family. Because everyone knows: First, you forget what a person's voice sounds like. For me, it is a reassuring idea that my children can experience first-hand how I became the person I am today, what is important to me and has shaped me. They should still be able to get to know me, if I can't accompany them on their life path, as it should be.

Hello, my dear. Actually, I wanted to write you a lot of letters, letters at times when I might not be with you anymore, for enrollment, when you first have heartbreak, when you get married, when you become a mom yourself. Now the disease is so advanced that I can't write anymore and I don't want to trust anyone else with it and I don't want to write anything to you on the computer. Fortunately, Grandma saw on TV that you can make this audiobook here and I was absolutely thrilled. In this audiobook, I'll tell you my story and that of our family, so you just know a little bit, the mom was where she came from, how she played as a child. Unfortunately, the audiobook also has a chapter about the disease and, yes, you just have to look at when you listen to something. I just hope that I make you happy with the audiobook and that you have a chance to hear my voice at any time when you feel like it and that I can be close to you again in this way.

I experience so often that children and adolescents have great fears of forgetting the memories of mom or dad. There are also children who were still very young when a parent died. They then come to us in groups and suffer greatly because they have little memory of the deceased. I am thinking, for example, of an eight-year-old boy whose mother died of cancer when he was 4 years old and he has no memory of her except for the photos, which he cannot relate to experiences or emotions, which makes him alternately sad and angry – a family audiobook would have been so good for him. I could add many more examples. I thank you very much for your valuable work, which gives children comfort and strength. With the help of the family audiobook, you make a very important contribution to ensuring that children and young people find their way back to life … and become happy again!

Hello dear ones, now I am the fourth day in the Eifel and I am working on my family audiobook for you. A week ago I didn't think that was possible, so I asked if we could move. My mouth hurt and even eating yogurt was a challenge, the soles of my feet were numb, I forgot in the middle of the sentence what I actually wanted to say and for me the worst, I was totally hoarse because of the cortisone the neck was so swollen. Mrs Grümmer's reply was prompt: Shifting is not, I'm fully booked. Why don't you come here first? The closer the day of arrival came, the fitter I became and in these four days here I was really well. First and foremost, I made the audiobook for you, of course, so that you can hear my voice whenever you want and when you are bigger, learn something about your mom. But it was also important for me to deal intensively with my life. Many beautiful memories came to light and with some stupid experiences I made a clean table. The last four days were definitely an emotional roller coaster ride, I had to cry again and again, but also laugh quite often. I'm sure you'll feel the same way, and that's a good thing. You can cry. But you also have to laugh a lot. It is also best to listen to your mom singing ‘Stubbs, the little Easter bunny’. And now I wish you a lot of fun listening to the audiobook. Your mama

For us as bereaved, it is in any case, because we can get them so close to us, the moment we hear it, through all the stories simply an infinite valuable treasure that we can always get out when we feel like it. I can put the kids to sleep if that helps them. You can do so many things with it. I listened to the audiobook the most intensively in the first days after my wife died and for this first grief process it helped enormously and I noticed that my wife drew a very great satisfaction from the fact that she was very balanced at a time when she was actually very tense due to the difficult situation of the disease.

There are two chapters where she turns directly to me, talks about me, talks about our relationship and that is something that is very hard to listen to on the one hand, but on the other hand also gives me extremely much, there is also strength to continue and it is just such a positive summary. And then, of course, the stories about the births of our two children, which give the children the opportunity to hear this at some point from their mother herself and not just from me and from others. The chapters, where she talks about the disease, are of course now very important and very interesting in hindsight and also to understand better what this has actually done with her.

Now I have told through two and a half days and just mentioned the whole titles and noticed what a wealth of topics and thoughts have come together. I am very, very grateful to have been given the opportunity to do this audiobook. This was very exhausting and I needed some handkerchiefs and many breaks, which were really necessary for recovery. Because, that was hard work, but I believe that it did me very, very well, that it is of course a treasure chest for you, but also at the same time it was helpful and healing for me and an element of how I deal with the situation and prepare for what is and will come due to my illness. The aim for me is, among other things, to look at the topic of death and dying with this audiobook with a little less fear and terror – and that is what I wish for both of you. We all don't know what's ahead and what's yet to come, but I wish all of us to embrace it and master it well and handle it well and integrate the topic of death and dying into our lives and that you can both see it as an enrichment at the end of your lives, not just this audiobook, but what we've experienced together.
