Family audiobooks without waiting time

When a parent becomes seriously ill and the goodbye becomes inevitable, children and families are under high emotional strain. In this situation, the family audiobook allows mothers and fathers to tell their life story as a professionally produced audiobook. This creates a lasting memory for the children, told with the voice of the parent. The family audiobook is free of charge for the participants, regardless of origin, income or social situation and is financed exclusively by donations.

The focus is on biographical work and the resulting legacy for the children who are left behind. Each audiobook is as individual as the life stories associated with it and is oriented towards the life world of the child and the family. The mothers and fathers are accompanied by professional audio biographers and memories, music or texts can be included. Languages of origin and family language habits also remain audible and help children retain their cultural and family identity. The implementation is accompanied and professionally implemented by trained audio biographers and sound designers. In sensitive biography work and careful sound processing, a hearing instrument is created that can preserve closeness and connection beyond the farewell.

The family audiobook does not replace therapeutic or palliative accompaniment and supplements existing care structures with time, listening and biographical transfer. Clinics, hospices, outpatient palliative care teams and psychosocial services can integrate the offer of the family audiobook into their processes in a low-threshold and unbureaucratic way. We work nationwide and also abroad. The recordings can be made on site in the facility, in the home environment or online. Our experienced team is happy to accompany interested institutions and their teams in the implementation of operational processes and takes over the entire organizational project process.

Our admission criteria: Parent with palliative diagnosis and at least one minor child.

‘Family audiobooks are always life stories, never death stories.’

Judith Grümmer, founder

The PalliativPlus offer is aimed at people in their final phase of life who are accompanied in a hospice, on palliative care wards or by outpatient palliative care teams.

Incurably ill parents with underage children can record their life story and personal messages as an audiobook, even if there is little time left. For hospice guests and their families, this means: With PalliativPlus, recordings can start immediately, regardless of regular production processes. The team on site supports the registration, the sponsoring association or local sponsoring institutions take over the financing. This creates family audiobooks without waiting time.

Study results point to the positive effect and importance of our offer for families. Children receive a lasting memory with the voice of the mother or father. Families actively shape part of their farewell process.

Creating a biographical audiobook can mean noticeable relief for parents with a palliative diagnosis. The memory of one's own life story often opens one's eyes to forgotten resources and mastered challenges. Thus, biographical work itself can become a coping strategy.

In line with the holistic approach of Palliative Care, the family audiobook focuses on patients as well as the private and professional environment:

  • Patients experience meaning and self-efficacy by actively shaping and passing on their life story
  • Family members receive lasting memory and orientation in the farewell process
  • Conversations about memories and farewells are professionally accompanied and relieve treatment teams
During the production process, project participants are offered psychological support.
